Why adopt an animal

pic17.jpg
  • When adopting an animal you are saving a life – all animals that come into the rescue are in need of a second chance. They have either been abandoned, injured, abused or are unwanted.

  • Adopting an animal costs less than buying one. Low adoption fees are much less than the cost of pure-bred animals sold for profit.

  • You can help break the cycle of pet over population. There are not enough homes for all the animals born every year, adopting an animal helps weaken the pet over population.

  • You adopt a pet that has received good care. All animals receive comprehensive veterinary treatment, are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped on national data base, given good nutrition, flea and worm treatment and training.

  • You are helping the rescue save more animals. When you adopt an animal, you are opening up more room to take in further animals in need

  • Gain a companion and friend for life

10 Questions to ask before adoption

Ask yourself these 10 simple questions, if the answer is not yes to all of them, then you may need to reconsider adopting an animal. It does not mean you will be a bad owner it just means you are not quite ready for adoption.

  1. Are you adopting out of impulse, eg because the animal is cute?

  2. Are you ready to have a companion for the ENTIRE life-span of the animal you are adopting?

  3. Can you afford the on-going expenses relating to owning an animal? Good quality food, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, grooming and vet expenses?

  4. Have you got enough time in your life style to provide quality time with your animal? Exercising, enrichment, play and training?

  5. Are you able to pay for emergency care if your animal becomes sick or injured?

  6. Have you researched the breed species of animal you are adopting to make sure it fits your family and life style?

  7. Will you be able to pet-proof your home and outside area to ensure the safety and needs of the animal you wish to adopt? (A dog does not belong on the end of a chain!)

  8. Does everyone in your family/household want to adopt an animal?

  9. Are you allowed to have an animal where you are living? Are you in a rental property or kiwi zone area, residential or rural setting?

  10. Do you have future plans to move overseas? Will you be able to take your animal with you?
